Co-Curricular
A widely acknowledged strength of our school is the broad range of co-curricular activities we offer our students. Students compete for the coveted ‘House Cup’, with points awarded when they participate in co-curricular activities. Onus house took the honours in 2022; will Saunders, Blair or Nicholls challenge them in 2023?
Students join sports teams, attend training sessions and play against other schools in the district, division, regional and state competitions. Swimming and athletics are prominent fixtures on the calendar and our soccer and girls’ footy academies give students specialist coaching and an advanced level of competition. Our senior students coach junior teams and our VET Sport and Recreation students support local primary schools sports carnivals.
Thornbury High School is the only government school in Victoria to offer all Year 7 and 8 students instrumental music lessons as part of our Performing Arts program. At no extra cost to families, students learn the saxophone, flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, guitar or percussion. March each year sees students performing in front of an audience at the ‘Strawbale Picnic’, followed by the May and October concert extravaganzas. As students proficiency develops, they become part of an ensemble with weekly rehearsals and regular gigs, often collaborating with students from our local primary schools
Musicals are a big part of life at Thornbury with 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and 'Matilda' recent productions. In 2019 our feature film ‘Thorn of the Dead’ received rave reviews. Students engage in production, direction, set design and construction, backstage, chorus and lead roles.
Our camps program offers students a range of local, interstate and international experiences. In addition to the year-level camps at 7 and 11, students attend outdoor education and music camps as part of their studies. Cross-year level trips to Central Australia, Cairns, Mt. Buller and Italy run on a schedule that allows families to plan and manage costs.
