Student Leadership
The College has a strong student leadership program with the following features:
- School captains at year 12
- A Subschool SRC at year 7 & 8, 9 & 10, 11 & 12
- A student executive which consists of year level representatives that meet every month with the Principal
- A nomination and interview selection process
- Student leadership training and forums
The College takes a different approach to SRC, asking students to submit a written application and sit a panel interview. The panel consists of the SRC Co-ordinator, two school captains and relevant Year Level Co-ordinator.
The junior and middle school representatives then complete a presentation of their plans and ideas at their year level assembly. One student from each year level meets with the Principal and the school captains once a month.
We have an SRC subgroup at each Subschool and meetings are held once a fortnight. Students have the opportunity to present and discuss various issues / concerns as well as work with other students in organising various activities / events throughout the year.
Student leaders this year are developing a student charter which will cover the following areas:
Curriculum, Facilities, Environment, Community, Student safety, Student Activities, Positive relationships, Valuing Diversity, Supporting studentsStudent leadership must be more than just fundraising and attending meetings it must be about students having a real say about what happens at school. The student charter should provide a way of achieving real student leadership at Thornbury.
