Discipline

School wide classroom management plan

Classroom rules

  • Follow the teacher’s instruction the first time
  • Be on time to class with the correct equipment at all times
  • Stay in seats or work areas unless given permission or instructed to move
  • Listen with respect to others (both staff and fellow students) without interrupting

The following classroom rewards will be used

  • praise
  • notes home to parents (in student planner)
  • material rewards (such as vouchers/certificates)
  • special privileges negotiated with the teacher

The following steps will apply if students misbehave

  • warning
  • separate (move to another position in the classroom)
  • isolate (asked to move outside classroom for a short time (max 10 min) -student needs to sit in chair in view of teacher or send to another class by arrangement- immediate punishment)
  • teacher detention
  • exit to coordinator or principal class (will result in school detention)

Detention

Teacher detentions
All teachers are expected to include detentions in their list of consequences.

  1. Teacher detentions are given after the earlier steps in the discipline plan are followed.
  2. Teacher detentions are held at lunchtime or after school for at least 15 minutes and supervised in a classroom by the teacher. Teacher should note detention in the student planner and ask for a parent signature.
  3. Where possible, part of the detention should be used to problem solve with the student(s).
  4. Teachers must keep a record of the number of times they have detained students.
  5. Once a student has received three teacher detentions in a term the Coordinator should be notified.
  6. If students do not attend their detention the teacher should speak with the appropriate Coordinator.

School detentions
School detentions are for serious breaches of general school rules. Parents will be given at least 24 hours notice when their child has a school detention. Parents are required to sign the school detention form which gives the reasons for the detention and students must return this form to the teacher supervising the detention. Once students have received a number of school detentions they may receive a Saturday detention.
