Enrolment at Year 7
How to Apply
If your child is in Year 6 at a government primary school, your primary school will give you a Parent Transition Pack early in term 2. This pack contains information about the enrolment process and timeline and includes an Application for Year 7 Placement Form. This needs to be completed and returned to your primary school by a designated date in May. On this form you will be asked to list three secondary schools in order of preference. Please consider the schools and where you list them on the form carefully as this may have an impact on where your child ultimately ends up being placed.
Your primary school sends the completed form to your first-preference high school. If unsuccessful, the form is then sent to the next school of preference and so on until your child is placed in a school.
In August your primary school will notify you regarding the school where your child has been placed. After this, the Secondary School will make contact with you regarding your child’s enrolment.
If your child is in Year 6 at a Catholic or independent primary school, you must apply for enrolment directly through Thornbury High School. The Enrolment timeline is the same for non-government school applications.

Complete and return this form by 17 May 2019 via email or mail to Enrolments, Thornbury High School, 238 Collins Street, Thornbury 3071.
You will be notified in August where your child has been placed.
Is Enrolment Automatically Guaranteed?
Thornbury High School currently has a ceiling on Year 7 enrolments with a maximum of 200 student places at year 7. All applications are individually reviewed, however placement is only guaranteed for students when Thornbury High is their designated neighbourhood school [i.e., the school closest to their permanent home address].
All places are allocated in accordance with the priority order of placement set out by the Department of Education and Training [DET]:
- Students for whom the school is the designated neighbourhood government school.
- Students with a sibling at the same permanent address who are attending the school at the same time.
- Students seeking enrolment on specific curriculum grounds.
- All other students in order of closeness of their home to the school.
- In exceptional circumstances, compassionate grounds
If Thornbury High School is not the closest government school to your home and your child does not have a sibling already enrolled who will be attending at the same time, you must complete a Grounds for Enrolment for Students Outside of School Zone Form. This form should be submitted, along with supporting documentation, with your Application for Year 7 Enrolment Form (this applies for both government and non-government school applications]. This form is available for download via our downloads section or in hard copy at the General Office.
Year 7 Enrolments during the School Year
If you are seeking enrolment after the start of the academic year, please follow the year 8-12 Enrolment process.
The school encourages parents of prospective Year 7 students to tour the school during the day and to pick up an information package. Tours run in small groups each Tuesday (approx. 60 minutes in duration), and parents are encouraged to tour the school with their children. Please contact the school directly to arrange a tour on (03) 9480 4066 (option 7).
Year 8-12 Enrolment process
Students currently in Years 7-12 seeking enrolment must complete an enrolment enquiry form and submit it along with a copy of their most current school report. Proof of address must be provided if the application is being sought based on designated school claim.
The manager of the year level where enrolment is sought will contact the applicant regarding their enquiry. The application will be considered based on whether Thornbury High is the applicant’s designated school and/or curriculum grounds.
