Parent Association
Thornbury High School Parents and Friends Association (PFA)
The aims and objectives of the PFA are:
- To contribute to the wellbeing of school community members
- To encourage the participation of all parents in the life of the school and the education of their children
- To provide opportunities for all parents of students of the school to discuss the welfare and the general education policy of the school and to assist in the development of a shared parent view on issues
- To convey proposals to the school council
- To provide social opportunities for parents and to inform and communicate with parents
- To work in cooperation with the school council
- To raise funds for the benefit of the school
Communication with the parents has been a major focus
- the parent email communication list
- regular articles in the school newsletter
- a parent section on the main noticeboard in the foyer.
- a presentation to the Year 7 orientation day
- a stall at the Grade 6 open night.
Plans for the Future
New parents coming into the school know that there is a forum for
them if they choose to participate. The state peak body, Parents
Victoria has referred to us as a ‘parent friendly school’.
The PFA recent focus has been on:
- increasing the use of email communication with parents – through advertising in the newsletter for parents to join the email list
- continue with regular meetings but reduce them to one per term (the minimum required by our constitution)
- maintain a focus at these meetings on ‘meet the Principal’, plus presentations on topics of interest to parents
- participate in Northcote Network parent workshops and networking meetings
Music Parents are also an active group who work closely with the music staff and students in a range of fundraising activities.
