Transition Learning Centre
An annexe of Croxton Special School at Thornbury High School
Croxton is a mild to moderate special needs school of 160 students, with 44 of their Year 7-10 students attending a purpose built annexe on the Thornbury High School site.
Students who enrol at Thornbury High School with ID funding in Years 7-10 are dual enrolled, with 70% of their enrolment at Croxton occurring in the Transition Learning Centre (TLC). This centre is located on-campus at Thornbury High School, and where students study English, Maths, Science and Humanities with their TLC specialist teachers.
Students enrolled in the Transition Learning Centre are integrated with other Thornbury High School students for all other subjects, their form assembly, extra curricula activities, and special events.
TLC students have access to activities that include, but are not limited to, sports and athletics teams, camps, drama classes, school musicals and productions, music and instrumental programs, debating, participation and inclusion in the school magazine and school photos, injections and immunisation programs, and a plethora of activities that are a daily occurrence in a mainstream school setting.
Benefits for TLC (Croxton) students:
Students with identified special needs are taught by specialist staff in smaller numbers, allowing greater interaction between students and their teachers.
The TLC (Croxton) students are proud to say they attend Thornbury High School; TLC students wear the same uniform, have lockers, carry THS planners and diaries, receive feedback and reports from THS staff, and attend home group at the beginning of each day.
Parents are able to support their children by attending a local school, normalising their educational experience. They also attend the same school as siblings with additional support.
TLC (Croxton) students may travel independently to and from school.
Thornbury High School offers a viable pathway to TLC students by linking to VCAL programs offered at Croxton.
Thornbury High School works closely with Croxton to build tolerance, acceptance and empathy between students and staff at both schools.
Students in the TLC (Croxton) program improve the diversity of Thornbury High School’s student body, and impacts positively on both the school and the wider community.
